Geography & Location
The Island of Murter is located behind the Kamena peninsula near
Tisno, in the northern part of the Sibenk Archipelago, and has a
surface area of approximately 19 square kilometers (11 km
long, 2.8 km wide). The island is slightly hilly, the highest point
being 125 meters above sea level, and therefore offers stunning
views of the Mediterranean and the Kornati.
Thanks to its location between North and Central Dalmatia, Murter
visitors have various tour and recreational options to choose from.
Murter is the "door" to the Kornati National Marine
Park - an archipelago consisting of 140 islands, islets and
cliffs, which were declared a National Park because of their natural
beauty and crystal clear blue waters.
KrKa National Park and the Plitvice Lakes, with their
unique and famous waterfalls (approx. 30 min and 1h driving time,
respectively) and the Paklenica National Park, with its stunning
landscapes, natural wonders and peaks of the Velebit Mountains,
(approx. 1 h 15 min) lure visitors back to the Croatian mainland.
A short boat ride away from Murter, visitors will find another
Croatian jewel, the Nature Reserve Telacica, which
encompasses the southeastern part of the island of Dugi Otok. The
reserve is famous for its bay (9.1 km long and 160 to 1800 m wide),
and the Mir salt lake situated within the reserve area.
